Black and White

If a picture can say a thousand words then here are 3 thousand expletives that come close to communicating how skiing makes me feel and why I devote most of my life’s time and energy to it.

We raced against the setting sun and shadows to grab these few pow shots after tracking up all the lines on Cardiac Ridge. I was exhausted from the 6K days, but kept rallying mini laps like a rando racer.

I don’t think people realize how tricky it is for photographers to get a great shot. So many variables with light, snow, subject, camera and operator in play.

Thanks to Tommy Chandler for the beautiful images.

Skiing in the dark (Photo shoot with Jay Beyer)

Last night I went out with the highly esteemed photographer Jay Beyer. Always trying to push his craft, we ventured into the night with some lights and a camera to see what we could do. This was Jay’s first time in the shooting skiing in the dark and I think he did really well, considering his subject he had to work with.

Between a face full of snow with every turn and the bright light it was actually pretty tricky to ski.

Luckily the snow was great and I could just ski by feel.

It felt really good.

I liked being out in the darkness during the storm.

This is one of my favorites! The snow really was this deep. Each turn was over the head.

The wind from this past storm blew the snow around a bit. This was a deep pillow that actually fractured and carried me into the gully. We were working on short steep pitches with low consequences though.

The options seem endless with the quick portable lighting we had. Looking forward to getting out again soon!

Stormy Pow Daze

Wow! We’ve just wrapped up with one of the best storm cycles I can recall. The snow has just been non stop until yesterday and I’ve been out with friends filming and tracking up as much as possible.

Flat light and fat flakes make it hard to shoot deep in the backcountry. Here Jonah nails the shot as I smile for the camera.

Meanwhile Jay Beyer (Thanks as always for the pics) captures Jonah capturing me as I capture a mouthful.

It’s been so light and deep it’s hard to tell when you’re off the ground or when you’re in the air.

We’ve had to shut down production on several different days due to the heavy blowing snowfall.

As I’ve said before, it’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

You may recognize this aspen forest! It’s been in every one of our flicks, usually as the deep pow segment. For some reason it just snows ungodly amounts here. Thank God! No, I’m not going to give away the location, but if you park near the maid’s spoon trailhead and wander around you’re likely to find it.

Looks like more snow on the way!

Y-Not Couloir Vid

Threw this together today from some pretty bad footage I took last winter on a ‘Gray Sky’ day.  Jay Beyer and Dylan Freed and I all made our virgin trip down the Y-not Couloir.

The Big Le Pow Ski!!

Black Diamond and Backcountry.com are putting together the first annual Big Le Pow Ski!

I’ve been invited to put on a filming/skiing clinic. This should be a really cool chance to hang out, ski and talk about the gear we use and how Powderwhore Productions operates on and off the mountain. We’ll have our new stickers and some vids to give out as well.

Why not sober up in the Y-not?

Still cleaning out the camera from an amazing week of high pressure a week or so ago. This is a little trip down the Y-Not Couloir with Dylan Freed. We had bigger plans, but we both showed up a little too hung over to pull it off.

Crossing the stream is always fun, but a boot full of water wouldn’t be a good way to start the day.

Lucky for me Dylan was in better shape (or the fact that he’s 10 years younger) and was willing to re-break the filled in boot pack.

I really felt like a sad sack on the up. Luckily gravity is much friendlier on the way down. Dylan is part way down the upper bowl.

Here is the rappel from below. It’s a bit of a free hanger into a cool little cave.

The down climbing after the rap was the sketchy part.

Dylan working out one of the bare spots.

A nice ski down to the road from here.

I have some footage from an outing in the Y-not last year. I’ll put it together and post it soon. Crazy week of big fun lines.
