In late March I went to the Ruby Mountains of Nevada to do some skiing for the camera (my girlfreind calls it modeling) for Mountain Hardwear. Photo shoots can be a real pain in the ass, but I knew it this would be good times since I was heading out with Andrew Mclean and my good buddy and photographer Jay Beyer.
We bounced up Lamouille Canyon on snowmachines and ditched them as quickly as possible to take to our feet. This is an amazing little range that doesn’t really feel like anywhere else in the lower 48. No, the bird in flight wasn’t staged, it just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Yeah Dave, I’m with you. This has been my first season locking the heel in 15 years and it’s great. Tele is great in pow and fun on big open slopes. I’m saving the AT set-up for steep ski mountaineering objectives and long traverses where weight is more of an issue.
Sorry for the slow response, but I’ve been in AK for the last 6 weeks.
Hi Noah,
Noticed you’ve been locking down your heels on occasion. I’ve been exclusively a free heel skier for 20 plus years, and recently hooked into AT gear. I go back and forth, and choose the weapon of choice depending on day and snow conditions, and what I plan on skiing. Contrary to many friends who’ve recently locked down, I have no problem going back and forth, and actually find that each transfers positively to the other. Interested to get your take on the AT transition, and the back and forth, and how you decide what to ride each day.
with such a short hop out there, I’ll be making that trip one of these seasons. I read andrews report on it as well, and it sounds quite interesting.
