The Wasatch Backcountry Alliance was recently formed in hopes of bringing the human powered winter community together and giving it representation. I’m honored to have been asked to be one of the founding board members. I’ve seen many bad ideas (Flagstaff lift) and attempts to expand (Ski-Link) pop up and it makes sense to have a unified voice to counter new lifts and developments that would change the incredible balance that exists in the Central Wasatch Mountains. There is no place I know of where you have such quick and easy access to such a diverse amount of winter activities, and therefore so much pressure from many interest groups. The Wasatch Backcountry Alliance plans to advocate for a rapidly growing (unlike ski area) user group that has had little to no previous acknowledgment by the Forest Service, or decision makers.
Please visit the WEBSITE and sign up for free if you haven’t already! You can also keep track of what’s going on though FACEBOOK. This is not just for folks who live here. This is for anybody who has ever, or might ever wish to visit and enjoy a walk through the woods by their own means.
Our first goal for this winter is to conduct an online survey. By signing up you will soon be asked to participate in an economic and census survey so we have an idea of the impact that backcountry users are creating. We are looking to raise funds for this survey. Please join us next week as the Wasatch Backcountry Alliance presents the Backcountry Film Festival.
