Ben and I had a date with a big peak down south on Friday, but the forecast of 50-60 mph winds made us change our minds. We had a late start and decided to go explore a new line in Stairs Gulch. Driving up the canyon we realized that our poor Wasatch has shed too much snow. We opted for a Bonkers lap, but then I remembered the funky line to lookers right that has been on the hit list for many years. I’ve been calling it Yonkers. It looked to be in pretty good shape.
There was great snow in the apron and we easily skinned through the choke into the chute.
The steepness increased and we switched to booting.
Ben chose a little added spice by cutting back to the right to gain the ridge.
There were some interesting glacier like features that Ben just couldn’t help but jump off of.
Yonkers isn’t as long as Bonkers, but much steeper and a little techy. Fun option if you’re in the neighborhood.
A line Derek W hasn’t skied? Hard to believe!
BTW – Noah, those liners in your aliens from the Hardrock post pics?? Care to share?
Hey Dave,
I’ sure Derek just forgot he’d skied Yonkers.
I stuffed some Dynafit liners in the Alien 1.0. My hope was to improve insulation, comfort and performance and I’d say it works in all those ways.
Always wondered about that line, and wondered why I never skied it. Looks fun.
That’s what’s great about the Wasatch! So many micro shots.
Nice line, good audible for some spice.
Curious as to the line scouting in stairs? East slabes? The choke over the ice buldges, maybe? Not expecting a tell all. The Thing in stairs I have been stalking this season never quite looked that good.stay frosty, Cheers!!!
Hey Dan,
We were looking at a west facing sub “chute” off the ridge down from the top of Stairs. Lots of cool stuff in Stairs!
